Jersey Shore is NOT New Jersey

http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/2009-12-10-jersey-shore-mtv_N.htm

In this article from USA today, Jersey Shore Tourism officials are outraged by the way MTV's new hit reality show Jeresy Shore is portraying the shore to be. These eight individuals are people who are all about drinking, clubbing, the infamous "GTL" and causing a scene everywhere the go. Forms of media like Dominos and American Family Insurance have even pulled ads, which in turn has caused the tourism groups of the Jersey Shore to make a statement critizing the show as being "one-dimensional". The tourism bureau is also very critical of the show because people are only associating the Jersey Shore with the show. People in other parts of the country think that everyone from Jersey is like this, and being from Jersey myself, its extremely irratating. No, not every girl wants a juicehead guido that is tans on the regular. Although the Tourism people from the Jersey Shore have every right to critize the TV show for the way these eight castmembers are portraying the shore to be, Seaside Heights is defintely taking in big business. Over the summer when I went down the shore, you would see people flocking around the cast, following them down the boardwalk, and even back to the beach. The hotels, restaurants, and beaches are all making insane amounts of cash from the publicity they are getting from show. People are coming from all over the country just to see these people because lets be real, even though these people are trashy, they are entertaining to watch!

  1. I can understand why people from New Jersey are frustrated because if I was from Jersey I wouldn't want to be stereotyped like the cast memebers of the show. But,I don't see why people think that everyone from New Jersey is like those people because there are different kinds of people everywhere, not just New Jersey. Also, why are people complaining if this show is making them so much money! If business has definitely improved shouldn't they just be happy about all the extra money especially considering the state the economy is in?

  2. I haven't seen the show, but I've heard plenty about it. Maybe some people are sucked into the idea that everyone in New Jersey is like that Snooki person, but there are plenty who don't buy into it. I think most people understand that the cast members of Jersey Shore are first and foremost celebrites who are hungry and desperate for any kind of attention. In my opinion, those who live in the area should just enjoy the extra money for the short years these partying celebrites will be popular.

  3. I think many people in the U.S. know this isn't indicative of New Jersey but outside the U.S. I'm afraid that these stereotypes persist...

  4. I think this issue boils down to the fact that people tend to believe what they see on television. Granted that tv often times does portray the truth, reality television does not. Jersey shore follows a minute cast of MTV participants who know they're on tv. I understand the frustration that many Jersey residents feel because of stereotypes that people outside of the United States develop because of the show; however it's not vindictive of New Jersey at all. The show is meant for entertainment and generating a large viewer base and succeeds in that aspect. Stereotypes are a byproduct of the show and are unavoidable.
