The site I found is Called Body Modification Ezine. This site is one of the largest and most well-known body modification sites on the internet. I first found out what body modification was when I was watching TV and a show came on where this girl wanted to split her tongue and have surgical implants implanted in her forehead that would look like antennas. Then another girl on the show wanted to have bone like implants placed in her forearm so it would look like there was a fish skeleton under her skin. These people all called themselves body modifiers. The site contains a media blog, thousands of videos of procedures being done, and thousands of stories from people who have had different procedures done. On this site, you can also ask questions and have them answered from community members. This site is definitely about social deviance because body modifiers want to stray the farthest away from society by changing their bodies in order to look different. Body modifiers get satisfaction from changing the way their bodies look. The purpose of the site is for people to view pictures and videos, ask questions, and potentially gain users who either have an interest, or are body modifiers to create a growing community. In my opinion, I think the site is deviant because these individuals who consider themselves body modifiers are the ones who are going to extremes to drastically alter their physical appearance and are considered outcasts by society. It is also important that you realize that these extreme procedures are done WITHOUT any type of pain killers or anesthesia so they feel all of the pain while choosing to change their appearance. Personally, I do not think I could take the pain of splitting my tongue in half, or putting "bone-like" implants underneath my skin with no pain medications. But hey, if you're into that, go for it!

Wow...that guy is pretty scary. I dont really agree with the term "body modifier". Its more like body mutilation if you ask me. Why someone would ever want to do that to their body is beyond me. People are crazy
ReplyDeleteI think I saw that same show! Her friend already had her tongue split and her boyfriend was the guy doing the body modification on them, if I remember correctly? I thought it was really interesting - I'd split my tongue if it wasn't so... strange. It's two separate muscles, why keep them attached? Putting things into ones skin freaks me out though. Especially antennas.
ReplyDeleteColleen,
ReplyDeleteBody modification can classify from something very minute to extreme modifications such as the person in the picture you provided. My piercer classifies herself as a person who engages in body modification and I don't feel that anything she has done to her body is deviant. I'm just saying that body modification doesn't always mean something extreme has been done, some people just have a lot of piercings and tattoos and consider themselves engaging in body modification.
:)
I agree that the website is deviant. If you choose to change yourself it should be a self choice and not something promoted. However, body modification can be simple and extreme as stated above so if I can't be against minor changes I guess I can't be against extreme changes.
ReplyDeleteLike I mentioned in class, nowadays it really does need to be extreme to be deviant because piercings and tattoos are more common. Some people do seem to have a fascination with looking like animals.
ReplyDeleteOh, and when I said animals, I meant the horned kind..I wasn't using that as a generic term.
